Kochi: The investigation into the sexual assault case involving director Ranjith is set to enter a crucial phase, with police preparing to seek his custody again, this time after closely examining digital evidence.
Kochi City Police Commissioner S. Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar said the next step in the probe will depend on what emerges from electronic data already collected. He also issued a strong warning against revealing the survivor's identity, stressing that strict action will be taken against violators.
So far, evidence collection has been completed at key locations, including Aspinwall, where the film was being shot, and the caravan where the alleged assault took place.
'Ranjith was the only one in the caravan. That is the evidence. If it is found as part of the investigation that there was anyone else, action will be taken in the future. Some people have been questioned. It is not known whether a complaint has been filed before the Internal Complaints Committee. Those on the set are aware of the incident,' the Commissioner said.
Despite extensive checks, investigators have not recovered any useful CCTV footage from outside the caravan, making digital and witness evidence even more critical.
The court had earlier granted three days of police custody, during which key evidence was gathered. However, citing the accused's health concerns and ongoing election-related pressures, he was later shifted to judicial custody.
Police sources say the investigation is progressing steadily, with the director reportedly cooperating. Statements from Ranjith and several others connected to the film have already been recorded.
Officials are also probing whether anyone may have assisted the accused in evading authorities earlier.
According to officials, the accused allegedly tried to contact the complainant after the incident, but the call went unanswered. Police have seized the phone as part of the investigation.
Kochi DCP Aswathy Jiji, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that there has been no statement indicating threats made to the survivor.
