Kolkata: The West Bengal Legislative Assembly was formally dissolved on Thursday evening following an announcement by Governor R. N. Ravi, bringing an end to the tenure of the state Cabinet led by Mamata Banerjee.
With the dissolution of the Assembly, Mamata Banerjee is now officially considered a former Chief Minister of West Bengal. However, her verified social media accounts on X and Facebook continue to display her designation as "Honourable Chief Minister, West Bengal" along with her role as founder chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress.

The update on her social media profiles has drawn attention as it contrasts with the current administrative status following the political transition in the state after the 2026 Assembly election results.
Banerjee had earlier stated at a press conference on May 5 that she would not follow the tradition of submitting her resignation to the Governor, arguing that the election outcome did not reflect the actual public mandate.
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections resulted in a major shift, with reports indicating a decisive victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ending the Trinamool Congress government's long tenure in the state. Banerjee herself was defeated in the Bhabanipur constituency by Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes, according to official results cited in reports.
Her continued use of the Chief Minister designation on social media has also sparked political comparisons with previous transitions in the state. Historical references have been drawn to 2011, when then Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee of the CPI(M)-led Left Front resigned following the electoral defeat of his government.
Political reactions have emerged from across the spectrum, with BJP leaders pointing to differences in how the transition of power is being handled compared to earlier changes in West Bengal's political history.
The situation continues to evolve as administrative formalities are completed following the Assembly dissolution and the formation of a new government process begins in the state.
