Stealth warship Mahendragiri delivered to Navy: What it brings

New Delhi: The Indian Navy has received the indigenous stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri, a state-of-the-art warship equipped with advanced weapons and sensor systems.

The vessel was delivered on April 30 at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai.

Key milestone for indigenous defence

Mahendragiri is part of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) frigates, representing a significant step in India's push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Officials described the delivery as a major milestone in indigenous warship design and construction.

The ship has been designed by the Warship Design Bureau and reflects advancements in stealth, survivability, and combat capability.

The frigate is equipped with a potent weapon and sensor suite capable of handling anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare operations.

It features a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, which integrates a diesel engine and gas turbine to power controllable pitch propellers. The ship also includes an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) to enhance operational efficiency.

Part of next-generation Nilgiri-class

Mahendragiri is the sixth Project 17A frigate delivered to the Navy within a span of less than 17 months since the first ship, INS Nilgiri, was handed over in December 2024.

These next-generation warships are considered a significant upgrade over the earlier Shivalik-class frigate, offering improved stealth and combat features.

With around 75 per cent indigenous content, the project involved over 200 MSMEs and generated employment for approximately 4,000 people directly and over 10,000 indirectly.

This highlights the broader economic impact of defence manufacturing under India's Aatmanirbharta initiative.

The induction of Mahendragiri enhances the Indian Navy's operational readiness in addressing evolving maritime threats.

With advanced technology, improved stealth features, and multi-mission capabilities, the frigate is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding India's interests in the region.
