Summer internships at PRL 2026: Eligibility, dates, and how to apply

The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), an autonomous institute under the Department of Space, has invited applications for its Summer Internship Programme 2026. The programme will run from May 11 to July 10, 2026, in a hybrid format combining both online and offline participation.

What the programme offers

The internship is designed to provide students and teachers with exposure to advanced research areas such as Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space and Atmospheric Sciences, Geosciences, Planetary Sciences, and Theoretical Physics. Selected participants will work on specific projects under PRL scientists or faculty members.

The programme also aims to encourage interaction with experienced researchers, helping participants gain practical insights into scientific work.

Eligibility for students

Students applying must:

  • Be Indian citizens
  • Be pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies from recognised institutions
  • Have a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA 6.32/10
  • Possess a strong foundation in Physics and Mathematics

Preferred candidates include those from fields like optics, space physics, geology, atmospheric sciences, chemistry, and related disciplines. Additional preference will be given to fellows of programmes such as KVPY and DST INSPIRE.

Eligibility for teachers

Teachers must:

  • Hold a PhD with at least five years of teaching experience
  • Have research experience supported by publications or projects
  • Be teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level in relevant scientific fields

Application process and deadline

Applicants must first contact a PRL supervisor for project approval. Once consent is obtained, they must submit the online application form. The supervisor must confirm the application by April 3, 2026.

Final selections will be communicated by the end of April.

Important conditions

  • Only a limited number of projects and seats are available
  • No stipend or financial assistance will be provided
  • Selected offline candidates may visit PRL, subject to formalities
  • Limited paid accommodation may be available on request
  • A certificate will be issued after successful completion and final presentation

This internship offers a rare opportunity for students and educators in India to engage directly with cutting-edge research in space and physical sciences. With increasing focus on scientific innovation, programmes like this help build early research exposure and strengthen academic careers.
