Chennai: Counting is underway in the Thiyagarayanagar Assembly constituency of Tamil Nadu, with AIADMK candidate Sathiyanarayanan B currently leading in the early rounds of vote tallying.
The high-profile Thiyagarayanagar (T Nagar) Assembly constituency, one of Chennai's busiest commercial hubs, is set for a closely watched contest in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, reflecting the pulse of urban voters in the state capital.
Famous for its crowded shopping stretches, textile showrooms and heavy traffic, T Nagar represents a unique mix of commercial vibrancy and dense residential pockets, including Kodambakkam, Ashok Nagar, Vadapalani and West Mambalam. The constituency has historically swung between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, often mirroring the broader electoral mood of Chennai's urban electorate.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK's J Karunanithi secured a narrow victory here. The party has this time fielded Raja Anbazhagan, who faces a challenge from AIADMK's Sathiyanarayanan B in what is expected to be a competitive contest.
According to the Election Commission of India, a total of 26 candidates are in the fray from Thiyagarayanagar this election. Apart from the two Dravidian majors, parties such as Naam Tamilar Katchi (Anusha V), Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (Anand N), and DMS (Ravi ML) are also contesting. A large number of Independent candidates have further added to the multi-cornered nature of the contest.
The TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has fielded Anand N from the constituency.
Thiyagarayanagar is one of the 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and falls under Chennai district. The seat is unreserved (General category), with Scheduled Castes accounting for 8.36% of the population and Scheduled Tribes 0.05%, as per Census 2011 data. The constituency has an electorate of 1,54,943 voters, including 74,682 men and 80,228 women, and a literacy rate of 90.33%.
Polling in the constituency was held on April 23, 2026, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4, 2026.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance won 159 of the 234 seats, while the AIADMK-led alliance secured 75 seats. With its history of close contests and urban significance, T Nagar is once again expected to play a crucial role in shaping the electoral narrative in Chennai.
