Tax change triggers massive EV surge: 13,000 vehicles registered in a day in this city

Tax change triggers massive EV surge: 13,000 vehicles registered in a day in this city

Karnataka: Bengaluru witnessed an unprecedented surge in electric vehicle (EV) registrations on March 31, with more than 13,000 vehicles registered across 11 Regional Transport Office (RTO) centres.

This marks the highest single-day EV registration figure in the city's history and reflects a sharp shift in consumer preference towards electric mobility.

The spike was largely driven by the Karnataka government's decision to withdraw certain tax exemptions for electric vehicles from April 1. Until recently, EVs-particularly electric cars-benefited from a 100 per cent road tax exemption. With this benefit set to be reduced or removed, many buyers rushed to complete their registrations before the deadline, leading to a significant one-day surge.

In addition to policy changes, concerns over fuel availability have played a key role in accelerating EV adoption. Ongoing uncertainty surrounding petrol, diesel and LPG supply, along with rising fuel costs, has prompted many residents to consider electric vehicles as a more reliable and cost-effective alternative. Unlike conventional vehicles, EVs are not dependent on fuel supply and can be charged at home, making them more convenient for daily use.

Data indicates that two-wheelers led the registrations on March 31, reflecting their popularity for urban commuting. The shift is also influenced by traffic congestion in Bengaluru, where smaller electric vehicles offer easier navigation and lower running costs.

The scale of the increase is particularly notable when compared to average trends. As of January 2026, Bengaluru recorded an average of around 267 EV registrations per day. The March 31 figures therefore represent a massive spike, estimated at nearly 400 per cent above normal daily levels.

The surge is part of a broader trend across Karnataka. In the current financial year, EV registrations in the state have crossed 50,000, with over 54,000 vehicles added between January and March alone. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year, indicating sustained growth in electric mobility adoption.

Several structural factors are also supporting this transition. South Indian states, including Karnataka, have been at the forefront of EV-friendly policies and infrastructure development. The growing availability of charging stations, especially for commercial vehicles, has further encouraged adoption. For many users, the ability to charge vehicles at home remains a major advantage.

With fuel-related concerns continuing and infrastructure gradually improving, electric vehicles are increasingly becoming a preferred option for both personal and commercial use in Bengaluru. The record-breaking registrations highlight a clear shift in urban transport trends, with the city strengthening its position as a leading hub for electric mobility in India.
