Thiruvananthapuram: As Suresh Sam Chandy crossed the finish line of a 42.2 km marathon in Port Elizabeth of South Africa, he sprinted straight into the history books.

With this achievement, he has become the first Malayali to successfully complete the Ironman Triathlon across six continents.

The Ironman Triathlon is globally recognised as one of the most gruelling single-day sporting events. Only a handful of athletes in India have managed to conquer this challenge across all continents, as the feat demands peak physical conditioning and immense mental fortitude.

The ultimate test of endurance

Organised by the World Triathlon Corporation, the Ironman rules are unforgiving. Participants must complete a 3.8 km open-water swim, an 180.2 km cycle ride, and a 42.2 km full marathon-all within a strict 17-hour time limit. Sam notes that the challenge begins the moment one decides to participate, requiring a total transformation of body and mind to match the scale of the goal.

The journey to the title

Remarkably, Sam is not a professional athlete by trade. His journey toward the Ironman title began in Europe, specifically in Denmark in 2018. After a hiatus due to professional commitments, he made an astonishing comeback in 2023, securing titles in Malaysia (Asia), Florida (North America) and Australia within a span of just 58 days.

In 2025, he added South America to his list by winning in Brazil. His recent triumph in South Africa marks the completion of his quest across all eligible continents. Ironman events are not held in Antarctica due to extreme climatic conditions.
