According to the briefing by GMCT Principal Dr. Indu P.S, the hospital has received 25 injured persons, with 13 currently under treatment. Among them, 5 are in critical condition, including one patient on ventilator support. The hospital has also confirmed that 12 bodies have been received, while identification and postmortem procedures are underway.

Authorities further stated that the facility has received 7 full bodies and 5 body parts, highlighting the severity of the explosion and ongoing forensic processes.

To handle the influx of burn victims, Government Medical College has cleared up their dedicated ICU for severe burn cases. A specialised team comprising surgeons, orthopaedic experts, anaesthesiologists and plastic surgeons has been deployed to ensure immediate and advanced treatment.

Hospital officials confirmed that all necessary departments were placed on alert even before the first patient arrived. Support teams from other government medical colleges have also been mobilised to assist in managing the emergency.

"We are well prepared to help them," the medical team stated, adding that coordination with the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Health Department, and district authorities is ongoing.

In a major step to support families and aid identification of victims, a 24x7 control room has been opened at GMCT.

Government response and rescue operations

The explosion, which occurred around 3:30 pm, has left the state in shock. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed that all necessary medical support be provided to the injured and ordered coordinated action across departments including health, police, fire and rescue, revenue, and disaster management.

State Health Minister Veena George has also instructed hospitals, including Government Medical College, Thrissur and Thrissur General Hospital, to prioritise specialised treatment for burn victims. Nearby hospitals have been placed on alert, and additional ambulances under the Kaniv 108 emergency service have been deployed.

Officials revealed that intermittent explosions at the site delayed rescue operations, as firecrackers stored in temporary sheds amid paddy fields continued to detonate, making access extremely dangerous.

Authorities have confirmed that a magisterial-level inquiry has been ordered. The sub-collector will lead the investigation into the cause of the blast and assess safety violations at the site.

Initial reports suggest that around 40 workers may have been present at the time of the explosion. While some are believed to have escaped with minor injuries, the exact casualty count is still being verified.
