The sleek, futuristic-looking aircraft was soon identified as Pathfinder 1, a cutting-edge zero-emission airship operated by Lighter Than Air (LTA) Research, a company founded and funded by Sergey Brin, a co-founder of Google.
Social media was abuzz after content creator César Concepción Salza posted a video on Instagram showing the enormous blimp slowly gliding out from behind a downtown high-rise. "What is this in the San Francisco sky today?" he captioned the clip, which quickly gained thousands of views and reposts on X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit.
Witnesses reported seeing the airship not just over San Francisco, but also across the Bay in Oakland and Alameda. The unusual sight prompted both curiosity and excitement, with many wondering if it was a government experiment, a new kind of drone, or a movie prop.
However, the truth turned out to be far more innovative than mysterious. According to NBC News, the Pathfinder 1 was conducting a test flight as part of LTA Research's ongoing study into eco-friendly aviation and sustainable cargo transport.
Built inside Hangar Two at Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, the Pathfinder 1 first took to the skies in May 2025.
The airship is part of Brin's ambitious project to revive lighter-than-air aviation using modern materials and electric propulsion systems - a potential step forward in reducing the carbon footprint of global logistics.
