US airport evacuated after anonymous threat; operations resume after search

Raleigh (US): Terminal 1 at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) was briefly evacuated in the early hours of Monday following an anonymous threat, prompting a large-scale response from law enforcement agencies.

According to airport officials, the threat was received at around 4:20 a.m., triggering immediate evacuation protocols at the terminal. Passengers and staff were asked to move outside the facility as security personnel secured the area and began a thorough investigation.

The sudden evacuation led to hundreds of travellers gathering outside Terminal 1 for nearly two hours, causing temporary disruption to early morning flight operations.

The terminal was reopened at approximately 6 a.m., allowing normal operations to gradually resume. Airport authorities have not disclosed further details about the nature of the threat but said investigations are ongoing.

The development came barely days after two pilots were killed and dozens of people were injured after an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck on a runway at New York's LaGuardia airport.

The crash late Sunday halted flights at LaGuardia, a major transport hub, with the Bombardier jet left tilted back onto its tail, its cockpit smashed, next to the damaged emergency vehicle.

The plane was operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional partner of Air Canada, which said the CRJ-900 aircraft flew into LaGuardia from Montreal as Flight 8646.
