Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, celebrated for her unmatched versatility across Indian cinema, has died at the age of 92. She passed away on Sunday, following multiple organ failure, confirmed her son Anand Bhosle while speaking to the media.

The singer was rushed to Breach Candy Hospital on 11 April, due to chest infection and exhaustion, her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle shared in a media post.

Anand Bhosle said the last rites will take place on Sunday at 4 pm at Shivaji Park. The iconic singer was the younger sister of the late Lata Mangeshkar.

A voice that redefined eras

Bhosle's six-decade career transformed the soundscape of Indian film music. Known for her breathtaking range, she moved effortlessly between genres, from soulful ghazals to bold cabaret numbers that broke cinematic conventions.

Her collaborations with composers such as OP Nayyar and RD Burman produced some of Hindi cinema's most enduring classics, including 'Aao Huzoor Tumko' and the timeless romantic track 'hura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko'.

She brought a new dimension of allure to songs like 'Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja' and 'Yeh Mera Dil', while her emotional depth shone through in masterpieces such as 'In Aankhon Ki Masti' and 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai'.

The 1990s and early 2000s marked a powerful revival in her career. Teaming up with AR Rahman, she delivered chart-topping hits like 'Tanha Tanha' and 'Rangeela Re'. Remix culture and Indipop trends further cemented her relevance among younger audiences with songs such as 'Raat Akeli Hai' (remix), 'Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main', 'Janat-e-Jahan' and 'Kabhi To Nazar Milao'.

Top honours

Bhosle received some of India's highest civilian and cinematic honours. She was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

Her performances in 'Umrao Jaan' and 'Ijaazat' earned her two National Film Awards. Over her prolific career, she won seven Filmfare Awards and a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

A life of many firsts

Bhosle began her recording career as a child, singing for the Marathi film 'Majha Bal' in 1943 before moving to Hindi cinema with 'Sawan Aya' in 'Chunariya' (1948).

Her talents extended beyond music; she acted in the Marathi film 'Mai' (2013) and was renowned for her culinary skills, inspiring restaurants in Dubai and Kuwait.

She recorded songs in 20 Indian and foreign languages and was believed to have sung more than 12,000 tracks, a testament to her extraordinary global influence.

Asha Bhosle's passing marks the loss of one of the most influential figures in Indian music history.
