Vijayan Vs Satheesan: Kerala CM, LoP lock horns, accept debate challenge as poll battle intensifies

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan have publicly challenged each other to a debate, with both sides indicating readiness to engage, as the state heads towards Assembly elections.

The exchange comes after the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Monday released its report card, which the Chief Minister shared on Facebook under a caption inviting discussion.

Chief Minister accepts challenge, points to Assembly as ideal forum

Responding to Satheesan's call, the Chief Minister said he was open to a debate provided all issues were discussed. He maintained that the Legislative Assembly was the most appropriate venue for such engagement, and alleged that those now issuing challenges had earlier avoided it.

At a press conference today, Vijayan criticised the Opposition for not utilising Assembly proceedings to raise allegations against the government. He said that if matters were raised on the floor of the House, responses would be immediate and substantive, suggesting the Opposition would find it difficult to counter them.

"If there were criticisms against the government, the Assembly debates were the opportunity to raise them. However, the Opposition did not take part in any of this. Even when there were allegations of corruption against ministers or claims of wrongdoing by the government, the Opposition did not raise them. Not even a single adjournment motion was brought in the last session. The most effective way to hold the government accountable was a no-confidence motion. If issues are raised in the Assembly, replies will be given. They will not be able to withstand those replies."

CM questions Opposition's approach, terms public claims 'unrepeatable'

The Chief Minister further argued that claims being circulated publicly could not be repeated in the Assembly without inviting direct rebuttal. He suggested this explained the Opposition's reluctance to engage in that forum.

"No falsehoods being spread now can be stated there. If they are, there will be a direct response. That is the issue. What we have seen is an attempt to avoid that. Have they contributed to Kerala's development? Have they adopted a constructive approach? When the Centre denies what the state rightfully deserves, have they opposed it? If they are ready to discuss these matters, I am ready for a debate."

Satheesan accepts, leaves logistics to Chief Minister

Soon after, Satheesan responded through a Facebook post, stating he would attend the debate at a venue and time decided by the Chief Minister, and that the public could judge the outcome.

"As the Chief Minister has said he is ready for a debate, he can also decide the venue and time. I will be present wherever and whenever he specifies. Let the people decide the rest."
