Vishu 2026 will be observed on April 15, 2026, marking the Malayalam New Year in Kerala. The festival signifies the Sun's transition into Mesha Rashi (Aries) and the beginning of a new solar cycle.
It is widely celebrated across Kerala with traditional rituals that focus on prosperity, renewal, and hope.
A key belief of Vishu is that the first sight (Vishukani) of the day influences the year ahead, making the morning ritual especially important.

Vishukani usually includes:
- Rice, paddy, and grains
- Fruits like banana, mango, jackfruit
- Coconut and vegetables
- Kani Konna flowers (golden blooms)
- Mirror
- Lamp (Nilavilakku)
- Coins, gold, and sacred items
- Religious books or idols in some homes
The arrangement is prepared the night before, usually by the elder member of the family, and is viewed immediately after waking up.
After seeing the Vishukkani, elders give money to younger members as a blessing. This is called Vishukkaineetam, symbolising prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.

Another major highlight is Vishu sadhya, a vegetarian feast that is prepared and served on a banana leaf. It includes dishes like: Rice, Sambar, Avial, Thoran, Pickles, Payasam.

Families gather to share the meal, marking togetherness and celebration.
Homes are cleaned before Vishu, and people wear new clothes (Puthukodi) as a symbol of fresh beginnings. Fireworks and temple visits are also part of the celebration in many regions of Kerala.
