The United States Department of Defense has announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany, marking a significant shift in its European military posture.
The move follows tensions between Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran conflict.
The decision is seen as the clearest step yet by Washington to scale back its presence in Europe, after months of criticism that European allies were not contributing enough to regional security and US-led operations.
Scale of US military presence in Europe
Despite the planned reduction, the US continues to maintain a substantial footprint across the continent. As of December 2025, around 68,000 active-duty personnel are permanently stationed in Europe, according to data from the Defense Manpower Data Center.
These forces are spread across 31 permanent bases and 19 additional sites accessible to the US military, reflecting a long-standing strategic commitment to European defence and NATO cooperation.
Operations in the region are coordinated by United States European Command (USEUCOM), which oversees activities across Europe and parts of Africa. It works closely with NATO allies through six component commands, covering the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Special Operations Forces and the Space Force.
These units are primarily headquartered in Germany and Italy, focusing on crisis response, deterrence, and joint security operations.
Key countries hosting US troops
US forces are stationed across more than a dozen European nations, with the largest concentrations in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.
- Germany: The largest deployment, with over 36,000 personnel, includes the major air base at Ramstein Air Base, a critical hub for US operations since 1952.
- Italy: Hosting more than 12,000 troops, with key bases in Vicenza, Aviano, Naples and Sicily.
- United Kingdom: Around 10,000 personnel, mainly Air Force units, are stationed across multiple bases.
- Spain: Approximately 3,800 troops are based near the Strait of Gibraltar, supporting naval and air operations.
- Poland and Romania: These countries host smaller permanent forces but significant rotational deployments under US and NATO initiatives.
- Hungary: A limited permanent presence supports training and joint exercises.

The troop withdrawal from Germany signals a potential recalibration of US defence priorities in Europe. While Washington maintains that its commitment to NATO remains intact, the move underscores growing pressure on European nations to take on a greater share of defence responsibilities.
