Work local, earn global: Kerala youth embrace a new employment model

Thiruvananthapuram: As technology and artificial intelligence reshape the global job market, Kerala is positioning itself to turn these changes into opportunities.

The state government is planning a range of initiatives aimed at enabling highly educated Malayali youth to earn internationally benchmarked incomes while remaining in their home state.

Soaring Professional Workforce

According to the LinkedIn Talent Insights report, Kerala's professional workforce has grown by 172% over the past five years. This surge is particularly visible in sectors such as software engineering, accounting and teaching. Employment participation in the service sector has risen to 48.5%, significantly higher than the national average of 29.7%.

Industrial Expansion into Rural Areas

IT and electronics companies, once concentrated in urban centres, are increasingly expanding into rural Kerala. Zoho Corporation has initiated a rural IT push with its centre in Kottarakkara.

Keynes Technology's unit at KINFRA Park in Perumbavoor is expected to generate employment for 1,500 people, while the return of professionals from the United States to these regions reflects a positive trend.

Over the past three years, KINFRA has created 27,335 new job opportunities-accounting for nearly 40% of the total employment generated in its 30-year history.

Skill Development and 'Leap' Centres

Through Leap Centres, operated in collaboration with ASAP and the Kerala Startup Mission, young people are being equipped to work for international markets while based in Kerala.

ASAP also offers specialised training for roles in the taxation sector in the United States. Entry-level salaries range from ₹4.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh per annum, with experienced professionals earning up to ₹20 lakh annually.

Startup-Driven Growth

More than 5,000 startups registered with the Kerala Startup Mission are contributing to the state's economic growth. Government-backed initiatives such as Idea Fest, Innovation Grants and Seed Loans are supporting innovative ventures.
