After Sitaare Zameen Par in 2025, Aamir Khan was supposed to start filming for Dadasaheb Phalke biopic to be helmed by Rajkumar Hirani.
Post that, he was supposed to begin working on a superhero action entertainer directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
However, both those movies aren't happening anymore and while the actor is yet to zero in on his next as an actor, in a recent interview, he confirmed 3 Idiots sequel is in works.

Aamir Khan Confirms 3 Idiots Sequel Is Happening With Rajkumar Hirani
In an interview with Amar Ujala while promoting his upcoming production, Ek Din starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi.
While talking about the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, Aamir revealed, "The story of Dadasaheb Phalke is a very inspirational one, and Raju was working on it. He made three drafts, but he is still not happy with the script. So, it has been put on the back burner for now. Maybe they will revisit it later."
He then went on to talk about the 3 Idiots sequel and said, "At this moment, I think he (Rajkumar Hirani) is working on 3 Idiots 2. Yes. I have heard the story, and it has turned out very well."
He continued, "The script is still being worked on, but it is a very good story. It has the same kind of humour and is also a very unusual story."

He further teased about the plot and said, "It is the story of the same characters you saw in 3 Idiots, but 10 years later. This is also a film that I will do in the coming days."
To conclude the same, he said, "It's a beautiful story, and I think Abhijat and Raju have written and conceived it very well. I am also waiting to do that. Once again, I will have to step into the character of Phunsukh Wangdu."

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra became the first Indian movie to hit Rs 200 crore at the domestic box office.
The all time blockbuster movie also starred R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani.
