While most viewers were focused on Ranbir's transformation into Lord Rama and Yash's imposing Ravana, eagle-eyed audiences also noticed that the actor briefly appears as Parashurama. The dual appearance left many wondering why the same actor is portraying two different characters in the film.

The answer lies in Hindu mythology.

Both Parashurama and Lord Rama are incarnations of Lord Vishnu, making them intrinsically connected despite belonging to different eras of the same divine journey.

The Divine Link Between Rama And Parashurama

According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu took ten principal incarnations, known as the Dashavatara, to restore balance whenever evil threatened the world. Among these, Parashurama is regarded as the sixth avatar, while Lord Rama is the seventh.

The two avatars famously cross paths during one of the most memorable episodes in the Ramayana, immediately after Sita's swayamvar.

King Janaka had declared that whoever could lift and string Lord Shiva's celestial bow, Pinaka, would earn Sita's hand in marriage. Rama not only lifted the mighty weapon but also snapped it in two while stringing it, an event that echoed across the heavens.

The breaking of Shiva's bow enraged Parashurama, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva who had received his divine axe from the deity after years of intense penance in the Himalayas.

When Parashurama Tested Rama's Divinity

Infuriated by the destruction of Pinaka, Parashurama confronted Rama as the prince was returning to Ayodhya after the wedding.

Determined to test him, Parashurama challenged Rama to wield Sharanga, the celestial bow associated with Lord Vishnu. Rama accepted the challenge and effortlessly strung the divine weapon, revealing his true identity as Vishnu's next incarnation.

Realising that Vishnu's mission had now passed on to Rama, Parashurama acknowledged him and stepped aside, symbolically bringing his own era to an end.

One Of Hindu Mythology's Seven Immortals

Parashurama also occupies a unique place in Hindu tradition as one of the Sapta Chiranjeevis, or the seven immortals believed to live through the ages.

The seven immortals are Hanuman, Ashwatthama, King Mahabali, Vibhishana, Veda Vyasa, Kripacharya and Parashurama.

His story doesn't end with the Ramayana. In the Mahabharata, he appears as the legendary teacher who trained some of the greatest warriors of the age, including Bhishma, Dronacharya and Karna.

The Tragic Incident That Defined His Life

Parashurama was born to Sage Jamadagni and Renuka, a princess and the daughter of King Prasenajit. He was the youngest among their five sons.

One of the most controversial episodes associated with him involves his father's command to execute his own mother. While his elder brothers refused, Parashurama obeyed without hesitation and beheaded Renuka.

Pleased by his unquestioning obedience, Jamadagni offered him a boon. Instead of seeking power or wealth, Parashurama requested that his mother be restored to life, and the sage granted the wish.

The Vow That Changed The Course Of History

Parashurama later became known for his fierce temper following the death of his father.

The conflict began when Kartavirya Arjuna, a powerful king, forcibly seized the divine cow Kamadhenu from Jamadagni's hermitage. Parashurama retaliated by killing the king. In revenge, Kartavirya Arjuna's sons murdered Jamadagni while the warrior-sage was away.

Devastated by the loss, Parashurama vowed to rid the earth of corrupt and tyrannical rulers, launching a campaign that became one of the defining chapters of his legend.

Will Ramayana Explore His Backstory?

Whether Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana will delve into Parashurama's origins or limit his appearance to his encounter with Lord Rama remains unknown. The trailer offers only a brief glimpse, leaving fans eager to see how extensively the filmmaker incorporates the legendary warrior-sage into the narrative.
