Raiganj: Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Thursday met the principals of Itahar Meghnad Saha College and Raiganj Surendranath College with a series of proposals aimed at improving the academic atmosphere and increasing student enrolment in the colleges.

According to sources, the ABVP delegation held detailed discussions with the heads of both institutions regarding several issues related to higher education and campus development. The student organisation stressed the need for creating a better study environment in college campuses, claiming that the quality of education and student participation had declined over the last few years. Deep Dutta, a member of the North Dinajpur district unit of ABVP, said: "We urged the college authorities to take necessary initiatives to increase student enrolment.

He alleged that educational activities in many college campuses had been adversely affected in recent years, resulting in a gradual decline in admissions. At the same time, teachers will have to attend the college in due time".

The ABVP members also requested the authorities not to display photographs of political leaders inside the campuses except those of eminent personalities and national icons.

They further expressed their intention to demand the early conduct of students' union elections in colleges. Another important issue raised during the meetings was the revival of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) units in colleges. Dutta claimed that NCC wings had been withdrawn from several colleges over the years and stressed that their reintroduction was necessary to promote discipline among students.

Chandan Roy, Principal of Raiganj Surendranath College, said the ABVP representatives placed several constructive proposals for the development of the campus and assured cooperation in improving the educational environment. Mukunda Misra, Principal-in-Charge of Itahar Meghnad Saha College, also expressed similar views regarding the discussion with the student body.
