New Delhi: The Mayor of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Pravesh Wahi, on Thursday inspected the Bhalswa landfill site and the compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Ghoga, reiterating the civic body's commitment to eliminating legacy waste and improving sanitation infrastructure in the capital.
During the visit, the Mayor reviewed ongoing biomining and bioremediation operations at the Bhalswa site and directed officials to accelerate the pace of work. He stated that the entire stock of legacy waste at the landfill would be cleared by December 2026, following which the reclaimed land would be levelled and utilised for public welfare initiatives, including the development of a green belt.
According to officials, the landfill once contained nearly 73 lakh metric tonnes of waste. Biomining operations, which began in November 2022, have already processed a significant portion, reducing the height of the waste mound from 65 metres to around 30 metres. Approximately 13.58 lakh metric tonnes of waste remain to be cleared.
Sanjeev Khirwar, along with senior officials including Additional Commissioner Arun Kumar Mishra, Chief Engineer P.C. Meena, and Narela Zone Deputy Commissioner Raghavendra Meena, accompanied the Mayor during the inspection.
At the Ghoga CBG plant, the Mayor emphasised the need for efficient operations and appealed to residents, RWAs, and market associations to adopt waste segregation at source. He added that RWAs achieving full compliance would be incentivised as part of the city's push towards a garbage-free Delhi.
