New Delhi: Alarmed by complaints of broken toilets, non-functional drinking water systems and poor fire safety arrangements in a government school, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday ordered a comprehensive structural audit of all Delhi government
schools, promising strict accountability and immediate corrective action.
The decision came after the Chief Minister conducted a surprise inspection at Government Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, where she interacted directly with students and reviewed the condition of infrastructure and basic facilities.
During the inspection, students informed the Chief Minister that water coolers and RO systems in the school had remained non-functional for a long time, forcing many to drink tap water directly. Several students also complained about unhygienic toilets, broken doors and irregular water supply. The inspection further revealed that the school's fire safety system was not operational.
Expressing strong displeasure, Gupta reprimanded officials and warned that negligence related to children's safety would not be tolerated. "Had the previous government genuinely strengthened the education system, students would not be struggling for basic facilities today," she said, taking aim at the previous dispensation's education model.
The Chief Minister announced that all government schools in Delhi would undergo a structural audit to assess the safety and condition of buildings and basic amenities. The audit will cover structural stability, drinking water systems, sanitation, cleanliness and fire safety preparedness.
Calling schools "temples of education," Gupta said the government was committed to ensuring "sensitivity, accountability and fulfilment of students' real needs" within the education system. She added that nearly 700 government schools in Delhi require new buildings or major redevelopment, as many existing structures are 40 to 50 years old and in a dilapidated condition.
Questioning the emphasis placed on publicity by the previous government, Gupta said, "Advertisements and publicity alone cannot improve education. What matters is ensuring real facilities, a safe environment and quality education for children."
She also directed concerned departments to immediately rectify all safety-related shortcomings identified during the inspection. According to officials, instructions for the city-wide audit are being issued, and departments have been asked to prepare detailed reports on infrastructure gaps and urgent requirements.
The Chief Minister said the Delhi government is focusing on result-oriented reforms, including safe infrastructure, hygienic toilets, clean drinking water, smart classrooms and digital facilities for students across the capital's government schools.
