Kolkata: Though the Election Commission claimed the second phase of the Assembly polls remained peaceful, TMC candidate from Noapara, Trinankur Bhattacharya, alleged that his opponent, BJP candidate Arjun Singh and his team deliberately assaulted his party workers on Wednesday "using a baton of the Central Force personnel".

A complaint was lodged at the Noapara Police Station, on the basis of which a case was registered, and a probe was initiated.

According to Bhattacharya, at several places, his party workers and leaders were assaulted. He alleged that amid this violence, a few common people were also assaulted by BJP men.

"Several of our workers and leaders, even councillors, were beaten up in the presence of the Central Force. Instead of intervention, the personnel helped the BJP men," the TMC candidate said.

He had posted a video on social media in which the Noapara BJP candidate is seen walking, surrounded by Central Force and a few other local leaders. They were seen chasing and assaulting a few TMC workers with fists and blows. Another youth was seen getting assaulted by the people accompanying Singh with a baton used by Central Force. However, none of the personnel present tried to stop the accused persons from assaulting the TMC workers.

Millennium Post, however, could not verify the authenticity of the video clip.

Bhattacharya further informed that a complaint was filed in connection with one such incident based on which an FIR has been registered. However, till Thursday evening, no arrest was made.

In the complaint filed by Supriya Das, the councillor of Ward No. 13, North Barrackpore Municipality, alleged that Singh, along with his bodyguards and outsiders, attempted to capture a booth when her husband tried to stop them. She further alleged that the accused persons also assaulted her.
