Darjeeling: The morning mist still clung to the hills of Darjeeling when the World Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway stirred to life with a new purpose.
On Friday, the familiar whistle and winding tracks carried not just passengers, but a message - one of democracy, participation and collective responsibility.
In the run-up to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election 2026, the railway joined hands with district election authorities for a Mega SVEEP (Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation) initiative - an effort to make voting not just a duty, but a shared celebration.
At the iconic Darjeeling Railway Station, a Sherpa cultural troupe staged a cultural show. A signature campaign invited people to pause, reflect and commit - not just to vote, but to vote responsibly.
With a ceremonial flag-off, the "Democracy Express" rolled out of the Darjeeling Railway Station, transforming into a moving messenger. As it chugged out of the station and curved its way towards the legendary Batasia Loop, it carried with it more than passengers.
Tourists leaned out for photographs; locals watched with quiet pride. The train, a UNESCO-recognised World Heritage icon, had taken on a new identity for the day - not just a symbol of the hills, but of the people's voice.
As the train disappeared into the mist, the message lingered in the mountain air: every vote matters and every voice has its place in this democratic journey.
"The Office of the District Election Officer, Darjeeling, organised the Mega SVEEP programme to boost voter awareness ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election 2026. The event began with a walkathon at Chowrasta, followed by an election pledge," stated Harishanker Panicker, District Election Officer and District Magistrate.
The final segment included performances, speeches, prize distribution, and a human chain by first-time voters, concluding with a pledge reaffirming commitment to democratic participation at the Batasia Loop.
