Kolkata: A fire engulfed several shanties located beside Akra Santoshpur Railway Station on the Sealdah-Budge Budge railway line of Eastern Railway on Saturday, affecting train services on the route.

The blaze broke out around 1.48 pm and gutted over 100 shanties, halting train movement on the stretch. Services towards Budge Budge were short-terminated at Majerhat. A fire brigade officer said four firefighting engines were pressed into service to fight the blaze, which was reported at 1.55 pm. No one was injured in the incident as per initial reports, the officer said.

The settlement falls under South 24-Parganas' Maheshtala Assembly Constituency, which goes to polls on April 29. Residents who lost their homes also reported losing documents. Railway teams began restoration work after the fire was contained, but services had not resumed at the time of going to press. Officials said repairs were underway and services would resume only after safety clearance, with the full extent of damage to be assessed thereafter.
