New Delhi: Marking International Workers' Day with a strong welfare push, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday unveiled a series of measures aimed at enhancing dignity, safety and economic opportunities for workers, signalling a comprehensive policy shift focused on grassroots impact.

Addressing a Workers' Felicitation ceremony at Sant Nirankari Mandal in Dhirpur, the Chief Minister announced multiple initiatives, including free registration for construction workers, a new skill development programme, and improved service delivery through modern labour chowks and Shramik Seva Kendras.

Highlighting the role of workers in nation-building, she said, "Workers do not merely labour; they lay the foundation of the nation's progress. The government's responsibility is not limited to utilising their workforce, but extends to improving their quality of life, ensuring their safety and creating opportunities for their families."

In a major relief measure, the government has waived the Rs 20 registration fee and Rs 5 renewal fee for building and construction workers. A 'Collective Marriage Scheme' was also announced to support workers with financial assistance and full arrangements for weddings.

The Chief Minister also emphasised strengthening social security systems, referring to platforms like the e-Shram portal, and said Delhi will expand access through a single-window system, on-site registration at labour chowks, Atal canteens offering meals at Rs 5, and mobile healthcare services.

During the event, safety kits were distributed to 1,000 workers, including helmets, gloves, masks and reflective jackets. Additionally, education kits were given to 100 children of registered workers studying in government schools.

Launching a major skill development initiative under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme, the Chief Minister announced that around 35,000 workers will be trained annually in trades such as masonry, electrical work and carpentry. Initial batches have already been rolled out across districts. Reaffirming her government's commitment, she said, "The Delhi government stands firmly with every worker. Ensuring their rights, dignity, safety and access to better opportunities is our core commitment. Respect for workers is respect for the nation."
