New Delhi: In a strong push to protect parents from rising costs and alleged arbitrary practices, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced sweeping measures against private schools, making it clear that violations could even lead to government takeover.

Taking a firm stance, the Chief Minister directed all private schools to publicly declare that parents are free to purchase books, uniforms and stationery from any vendor of their choice. Schools have been asked to display this information prominently on notice boards, websites and in any in-house stores. "No parent can be compelled to purchase items from the school or from any single designated vendor," she said, adding that while schools may suggest five to six vendors for convenience, "no purchase can be made mandatory."

Rekha Gupta warned that the government will not hesitate to act against violations. "This is not a routine instruction but a matter of serious concern," she said, underlining that any deviation would invite "the strictest possible action, including takeover if necessary."

The Chief Minister also indicated that she may conduct surprise inspections based on complaints received from parents. "Parents have written to me indicating where inspections should be carried out next. I will visit all such places where irregularities are reported," she said, inviting more feedback from the public. She added that these inspections are aimed at ensuring accountability and restoring order in the education system.

Acting on complaints, a joint team of the Education and Revenue Departments recently carried out a two-day surprise inspection at Venkateshwar Global School, where multiple violations were detected. Officials found that the school was operating without a valid fire safety certificate, while a swimming pool on the premises was running without a licence and was sealed immediately. Several other irregularities were also flagged during the inspection.

The Delhi government has made it clear that action will not be limited to a single institution. Authorities are now reviewing the functioning of all private and aided schools across the capital. The Chief Minister reiterated that the government is committed to ensuring transparency, safety and quality in education, stating that necessary steps will be taken to safeguard the interests of students and parents alike.
