Producers vs EIMPA prez row escalates

Kolkata: In a significant development, police personnel, along with the CRPF, visited the Eastern India Motion Picture Association (EIMPA) office on Wednesday following rising tensions.

The development comes in the wake of a political regime change in West Bengal from the TMC to the BJP, after which a group of disgruntled producers gathered at the EIMPA office. EIMPA president Piya Sengupta said that she and her colleagues felt unsafe following the visit by the agitating producers.

Meanwhile, producers including Milan Bhowmik and Satadeep Saha have levelled multiple allegations against Sengupta, accusing her of irregularities in running the producers' body. They have demanded her resignation and alleged that she worked in close coordination with Swarup Biswas of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, thereby politicising the association. The group has also called for fresh elections. "I have been elected by the members of EIMPA and this is not a political organisation. We have called for a meeting on May 22 and will decide the next course of action," Sengupta said.

The protesting producers also raised concerns over actor Bonny Sengupta, son of Piya Sengupta, allegedly convening a meeting at the EIMPA office on Wednesday.
