US industry delegation meets Jitendra Singh

New Delhi: A US industry delegation from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) on Monday met Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh to explore private investment opportunities in India's nuclear energy sector.

The discussions centred on India's Nuclear Energy Mission, recent policy reforms under the newly enacted SHANTI Act, 2025, and the expanding scope of India-US cooperation in clean and critical energy technologies.

Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Rajesh S Gokhale, and senior officials from the Department of Atomic Energy also participated.

Singh said India aims to scale nuclear power capacity from 8.8 GW at present to 100 GW by 2047, in line with the Viksit Bharat vision.

"India's rapidly growing nuclear energy programme is creating major opportunities for global partnerships in manufacturing, technology cooperation, supply chain integration and advanced research," he said.

The minister noted that the SHANTI Act, 2025 a landmark policy reform is designed to facilitate greater private and foreign participation in the nuclear sector.

He added that the implementation framework under the Act is being finalised. India is also advancing plans for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) with an allocation of nearly Rs 20,000 crore, with significant scope for India-US collaboration in micro-reactors and AI-enabled nuclear safety systems.

The two sides reviewed ongoing bilateral initiatives, including the proposed Westinghouse AP1000 project at Kovvada and the LIGO-India project backed by a budgetary provision of Rs 2,600 crore -being implemented in collaboration with the US-based LIGO Laboratory and the National Science Foundation.
