Voting for any party other than TMC means vote for BJP: Abhishek Banerjee

Kolkata: Alleging that Congress, Aam Janata Unnayan Party of Humayun Kabir and Central agencies are the three agencies of the BJP active in the region, Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, from an election rally in Murshidabad, said that attempts were being made to delete the names of the poor and minority voters from the electoral rolls.

Claiming that the Opposition parties in the state were playing with the emotions of the community, Banerjee said casting votes in favour of any party other than TMC amounts to voting BJP.

"One vote for any party other than the TMC is a vote for the BJP," Banerjee said.

Addressing a gathering after a roadshow in Farakka, he claimed that while the BJP was "breaking the Congress", the TMC was "thwarting the BJP's influence on the ground".

Slamming Congress, Banerjee told the gathering that no MP or any representative from the party stood by the people in the past two years to address their demands. He also stated that those who were trying to divide the votes will be given a befitting reply by the people in the upcoming elections.

"I urge people-Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians-not to be misled. Those trying to divide you must be given a befitting reply on polling day. If you want to defeat the BJP, the only way is to vote for the TMC," he said.

Taking a potshot at CPI(M), he said: "I heard that the Left has not fielded a candidate in the Berhampore Constituency. Will the Left vote for Congress candidate Adhir Chowdhury?"

Divulging his party's plans for the people living in the erosion-hit areas, Banerjee said Trinamool Congress would push for their rehabilitation on unused land under the Farakka Barrage authorities.

"We will launch a movement in Farakka and Samserganj to ensure that the unused land of the Farakka Barrage is made available for the rehabilitation of those who have lost homes. This is our commitment, our pledge," he said.

Ganga erosion, a national disaster, but no steps have been taken by the Centre despite the Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's repeated appeals, he alleged.

He also added that the Chief Minister has already announced funds for the purpose, but work has been initiated only to be delayed by "land-related issues".

The Diamond Harbour MP also launched a sharp attack on the NDA government after the delimitation bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha, saying the Centre is "clearly on borrowed time".

Alleging that the Centre was trying to bring in the delimitation exercise to divide the country, Banerjee added: "We will not allow any change to the Constitution by force."
