100 Days Of HYDRAA: The Good, Bad, & Ugly

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has been the talk of Telangana over the last few months. Since it demolished Nagarjuna's N-Convention for illegally encroaching on a lake in Madhapur, HYDRAA has gained prominence.

All was well when HYDRAA targeted encroachments of the wealthy and well-established, but matters turned serious when it began demolishing the residences of poorer individuals. Those who once praised HYDRAA began criticizing it as it started targeting the properties of poor people.

Today marks 100 days since HYDRAA's inception. In this time, reports indicate that the poor have suffered more than the rich due to the agency's actions.

After the initial uproar, HYDRAA issued notices to illegal encroachments owned by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's brother Tirupati Reddy, Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, and several prominent builders. However, none of these establishments have been touched even after all these days. HYDRAA has not even mentioned these cases in the media recently.

Meanwhile, incidents like the demolition of a newly registered house of an elderly couple, the demolition of an individual's newly inaugurated house, a woman's suicide out of fear of losing her home, and numerous court filings by individuals fearing demolitions have added to the controversy. Quite often, it is being reported in the media that poor and common people's houses are being demolished by HYDRAA.

Additionally, all the debris from HYDRAA's demolitions remains scattered at the sites. What began as an inspiring initiative has now become heavily criticized. It remains to be seen if HYDRAA can regain public trust by addressing illegal properties of influential individuals before targeting the residences of the poor.
