The government of India clarified that state governments can take legal action against individuals who post offensive and derogatory content on social media.

Responding to Nandyal TDP MP Byreddy Shabari's question regarding the same, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated that state governments can take action against social media offenders as per Bharat Nyay Sanhita 2023.

It was also mentioned that action can be taken under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 against individuals who post derogatory and offensive content about women and children.

Taking to X, Byreddy Shabari tweeted, "The Central Government clarified in the Lok Sabha that state governments have the authority to take legal action against social media offenders as per the law."
