Manish Malhotra has recently confirmed that he won't direct the biopic based on veteran actress Meena Kumari. The film was supposed to feature Kriti Sanon in the lead and the project won't be happening anymore as planned.

Manish appeared at the International Film Festival of India held in Goa, saying that although the biopic is being shelved, he will work on another project soon. He further stated that his passion for directing is mostly inspired by the late Yash Chopra.
Manish mentioned that his dream was to launch a new narrative and people were expecting his films to feature Kareena Kapoor Khan or other young girls along with a lot of glamour.

Notably, the biopic was involved in controversy for a long time ever since the reports of its making went viral on different platforms. A major objection came from Meena Kumari's stepson Tajdar Amrohi, who threatened to take legal action.
Tajdar was critical of the decision to make a biopic on Meena since he claimed that the film was announced without his permission, adding that his Rukhsar was also against it.

It seems like the makers would have landed themselves in trouble if the biopic was made. At this moment, it is a good decision to step back and focus on something else.
Apart from that, biopics are not a good option in today's time considering that projects like Chandu Champion and Maidaan failed at the box office earlier this year. There is a possibility that the planned project would have met the same fate.
Furthermore, producers need to understand that people can access the internet to get any kind of information nowadays. So, the best option will be to focus on unique subjects instead of biopics.
