What Is the Film About?
Dacoit is about Hari (Adivi Sesh), his love and betrayal with Juliet (Mrunal), and how misunderstandings and sacrifice shape their story.
Performances
Adivi Sesh once again gives his all to the role, but this time it turns out to be a mixed bag. The biggest complaint is the dialect. The regional dialect he attempts does not quite work and sounds artificial.
Another issue is the constant effort to make almost every scene feel heroic. That effort is quite visible and takes away the natural ease from his performance.
That said, irrespective of the film's result, Sesh once again shows how committed he is as an actor.
Mrunal Thakur once again gets a sensible role that will earn her goodwill. Even though the writing is not very impressive, her performance and screen presence help her stand out. She is undoubtedly the highlight of the film and will surely gain more fans.
Analysis
Dacoit is directed by Shaneil Deo, with the story and screenplay jointly written by the director and Adivi Sesh. The film opens with a flashback. While it briefly grabs attention, the love track that follows is only mildly engaging. There is nothing fresh in the romance, but the unknown motives at this stage add a bit of curiosity.
However, what unfolds until the interval is largely dull and unexciting. Whether it is Adivi Sesh's escape from jail or the robbery sequence at the interval, both lack impact. The staging feels flat, and even technically, the film fails to elevate these crucial blocks.
Unnecessary elements like an item song and the ambulance escape through a police checkpoint highlight the film's reliance on outdated cinematic clichés. This is surprising for a film starring Adivi Sesh, who is usually associated with sharper writing.
Overall, the biggest issue is the treatment, which makes the entire first half feel flat and uninvolving, though the jail escape backdrop keeps things watchable at best.
The second half continues the dull foundation laid in the first half and carries the same moody tone throughout. There are a couple of twists, but they do little to lift the film as it moves at its own slow pace.
Even the most important climax feels staged rather than organic. The intent to tell a love story is clear, but the emotional connect never lands.
The bland writing becomes even more evident here. Apart from Mrunal, whose performance carries her role more than what is written, no character leaves an impact. Despite having a strong cast like Atul Kulkarni, Prakash Raj, and Anurag Kashyap, none of them get a single impressive moment. This clearly highlights the major letdown in the writing department.
Overall, Dacoit comes across as a misjudged film from Sesh. Known for sharp writing and engaging narratives, this turns out to be a clear misfire. He officially takes credit for the story and screenplay, but the end result feels flat and disappointingly mediocre. He misses the mark by a wide margin here. In the end, Dacoit turns out to be a dull watch.
Performances by Others Actors
Dacoit has a fine supporting cast, but sadly not a single character stands out. Anurag Kashyap, Prakash Raj, Sunil and Atul Kulkarni are all wasted in lightly written roles.
Two female actors, Kamakshi Bhaskarla and Zayn Marie Khan, get brief roles, and they deliver their parts well within the few minutes given.
Music and Other Departments?
Music by Bheems Ceciroleo is alright. A couple of songs are fine, and the background score by Gyaani works.
The cinematography by Dhanush Bhaskar is decent and does the job. However, the film feels longer than its actual runtime, and the editing could have been sharper, though a few cuts are interesting.
Production values by SS Creations and Suniel Narang Production are adequate and suit a simple love and action film like Dacoit.
