Freight Corridor Being Planned Via Telangana

Freight Corridor Being Planned Via Telangana

Mirchi 9 4 months ago

A dedicated freight corridor between Itarsi and Vijayawada has reached an important milestone. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation has submitted the DPR to the Railway Board for the 992 km north-south DFC that will pass through Telangana.

The Board is currently reviewing the proposal.

The project is expected to receive approval during the Union Budget on February 1, 2026. The freight line will separate goods trains from passenger services, which currently use the same routes. This change is likely to reduce travel time, cut transport costs and increase passenger train speed.

The Itarsi-Vijayawada corridor will connect northern and southern states. DFCCIL has proposed the route through Telangana. The corridor is expected to pass Sirpur-Kagaznagar, Manchiryala, Ramagundam, Kazipet and Khammam, though the exact alignment is yet to be confirmed. It may pass through key industrial zones.

Telangana could see major benefits from the project. The corridor will support industrial clusters, warehouses and multi-modal logistics hubs. It may also reduce heavy trucks on highways and encourage greener logistics. Reduced road congestion and faster freight movement could attract more investment.

Modern heavy-duty tracks and upgraded signalling systems are planned. A digital traffic management system is under discussion to improve operations. Once the Railway Board approves the plan, it will move to Union Cabinet for final clearance. Budget allocation, land acquisition and environmental approvals will follow.

Meanwhile, the existing dedicated freight corridor between Kharagpur and Vijayawada has already been extended till Nidubrolu, covering 1149 km. This new Itarsi-Vijayawada section marks a major expansion in India's freight network.
