Hit Comedy Franchise Dying: Can New Writers Save?

Hit Comedy Franchise Dying: Can New Writers Save?

Mirchi 9 11 months ago

According to the latest reports, this long-standing collaboration is all set to happen for the 14th time in 2026, with the fifth instalment of the Golmaal franchise.

Sources reveal that Rohit Shetty is currently shooting for the Rakesh Maria biopic with John Abraham in Mumbai. Once that's wrapped up, Rohit will begin prep for Golmaal FIVE, aiming to take the film on floors by February or March 2026.

Interestingly, a new team of writers is expected to be brought on board for the film, which is a much-needed change, according to fans.

Golmaal Five will also mark the reunion of Ajay Devgn with the core cast Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu, Shreyas Talpade, and Johnny Lever, among others.

While the earlier Golmaal films were some of the most hilarious comedies Bollywood offered, the big question remains- Is it really a smart move for Rohit Shetty to create a fifth instalment?

Looking at Rohit's recent work, Cirkus, Sooryavanshi, and Singham Again, it seems like he has lost the magic he once had in the early 2010s when films like Chennai Express and Golmaal became blockbusters.

Audiences feel his style of humour has become outdated, and that his brand of filmmaking just doesn't connect the way it used to. His last film, Singham Again, was a major disappointment and was also heavily trolled online.

Even Golmaal 4 wasn't exactly a great film, but since it was released pre-pandemic, when even average comedies could do well, it managed to earn a little over ₹200 crores.

Given all this, making a fifth film in such a beloved franchise may not be the best move. Housefull 5 has already tarnished its brand, and seeing another iconic series go down the same path is the last thing fans want.

However, there's a glimmer of hope as Rohit Shetty is reportedly hiring new writers this time.

His previous films were written by Farhad Samji, and after the backlash Housefull 5 received for its comedy, it's a wise choice to bring in fresh talent.

This change in the writing team is the only real hope fans have. If Golmaal Five delivers fresh comedy and a new perspective, it might avoid the fate of Rohit's previous films and give audiences something memorable.

Otherwise, it will just end up being another cash grab under the franchise banner.
