India's Education Fiasco: Male Teacher Pregnant?

Bihar's education department has done it again, and like most of the times, not in a good way. This time, they've managed to declare a male teacher pregnant and even granted him maternity leave.

The incident happened at Hasanpur Osti High School in Hajipur's Mahua block.

Jitendra Kumar Singh, a teacher at the school, was listed as "on leave due to pregnancy" in the official e-portal, e-Shiksha Kosh.

This portal is where all leaves are registered, including maternity leaves for women. Naturally, this mistake has left everyone confused.

When asked, Block Education Officer (BEO) Archana Kumari explained it was a technical error. "The teacher's leave was marked in the wrong category. Male teachers do get 15 days of leave under a different category, but not this!"

She assured that the mistake would be fixed soon. Apparently, the portal has been causing other issues too, like turning women teachers' casual leaves into earned leaves.

For context, women teachers in Bihar can take up to 180 days of maternity leave. Government employees can also avail it for up to two children. But clearly, the system doesn't quite understand who qualifies.

This isn't the first time the department has made such mistakes. Just last month, officials were warned about being careless during school inspections.

While this error might be funny, it points to a bigger problem. Bihar desperately needs better systems to overcome these embarrassing mix-ups.
