It happened in Delhi. It happened in Bengaluru. Now, it's happening to Hyderabad. High density of population, richer citizens with multiple cars and lack of infrastructure in keeping with city's growth.
The ruling Congress is doing its bit to revive lakes in the city. But who is to address the traffic problem. Of course, it's the onus of the government. Musi Rejuvenation Project is welcome, but Hyderabad is losing it's sheen as a livable city. There was a time when techies preferred Pune and Hyderabad for long-term living. But Hyderabad is no longer on the list of many.
Social experts say that Hyderabad must follow Singapore style where buses are operated by private bodies as it increases efficiency. Similarly, the city must be saturated with AC buses so that people understand taking a bus is a better option.
On the other hand, experts say that Hyderabad now requires 500 km Metro and administration must make sure 80% of the population lives nearer to the Metro like in Paris.
When population breaches a certain point, delimitation is advised. Bengaluru has five urban corporations, London has 24 boroughs. A corporation must not have more than 25 lakh population for administrative convenience. Meanwhile, the government must expand pedestrian walkways in Hitec city and other IT corridors to make walking easy and enjoyable. They must line the roads with shade-giving trees like in Singapore for the convenience of citizens.
As of now, 6500 buses ply the city. There is a need for 15000 buses. But since the RTC is run by IAS officers who change, there is no development in keeping with times.
One solution is delimitation every 10 years. But no such thing happened in Hyderabad. Hence the politicians no longer care as the number of seats haven't increased.
In the process, the city is losing out. People need civic sense and usage of public transport must not be looked down upon. The government must take up delimitation and make sure each corporation makes handling pollution top priority. It is time for action before the city chokes.
