Padayatra has always been a strong political tool in Andhra Pradesh. YS Rajasekhar Reddy walked across the state and came to power in 2009. Chandrababu Naidu did the same and became the first Chief Minister after the bifurcation.
Jagan walked about 3600 kilometres in 2019 and became Chief Minister, while Nara Lokesh broke that record in 2024 as TDP returned to power.
After the disastrous 2024 result, YSR Congress has hit rock bottom. Jagan is now depending on another Padayatra for political recovery. YSR Congress spokesperson Kavuru Venkat Reddy said in a TV debate that Jagan will begin his Padayatra 2.O fifteen months before the elections and will return home only after the campaign ends.
Venkat Reddy also said that Jagan plans to walk 5000 kilometres, breaking his own 3600 kilometre record and setting a new milestone. At present, the longest Padayatra record belongs to Nara Lokesh.
Jagan will aim to meet people, learn their issues and make promises during this Padayatra. This strategy worked for him in 2019, and he hopes it will work again in 2024.
But this time the situation is different. Before 2019, people did not fully know Jagan Mohan Reddy. The "Okka Chance" appeal played a major role. Now people have seen five years of his administration. They felt neglect and arrogance, and they rejected his approach that focused on freebies instead of development, infrastructure and job creation.
Jagan also appears to have lost emotional connection with the public. During those five years, he stayed inside the Tadepalli Palace and did not let people meet him. Even MLAs and senior leaders struggled to get access.
Whenever he travelled, curtains were placed on both sides of the road, creating a barrier between him and the public. Shops were shut, traffic stopped and schools or colleges were given holidays. People were kept away from him completely.
Now Jagan expects the same people to forget all that and welcome him during his Padayatra. Many may not accept this sudden change. They may feel that Jagan meets people only when he needs power. He now faces the challenge of overcoming these memories.
