What Is the Film About?
Kantara: Chapter 1 follows Berme (Rishab Shetty), a man caught between village traditions and looming threats.
It blends action, folklore and drama building up to a strong divine climax.
Performances
Rishab Shetty once again delivers nothing short of a terrific performance. It's a career-defining performance that could make any actor envious. The fact that he both directed the film and acted as a lead in it truly deserves a huge round of applause.
The effort he puts into multiple departments never feels forced, and we never feel the presence of a director on screen while he is performing. This seamless balance is one of Rishab Shetty's biggest successes in Kantara.
The divine trance act, which won him huge accolades in the first Kantara is repeated in Kantara Chapter 1, and he executes it brilliantly once more. There are multiple sequences throughout the film where his performance earns spontaneous applause.
Rukmini Vasanth plays the female lead. In the first half, her role feels patchy and poorly placed with limited screen time that makes her presence barely noticeable. However, starting from the mid-portion of the second half her role becomes crucial to the film. She comes across as not only a refreshing presence but also a real asset, bringing charm, screen presence and a neat performance that adds depth to the story.
Analysis
Kantara Chapter 1, the prequel to 2022's Kantara, is once again written and directed by Rishab Shetty who also plays the lead role. The film opens with striking visuals and right from the start, it sets the tone with strong world-building and a fun, engaging first half. The entertainment is well-blended even though it's not entirely working but the scale feels bigger compared to the first Kantara.
What really stands out is the superb visual quality, solid casting and impressive VFX work. The forest action block at the start and the chariot sequence both land well. The interval episode, in particular is outright bonkers - the background score, CG design, and overall execution elevate the film and raise high expectations for the second half.
On the flip side, the writing falls short. Dialogues rarely leave an impact and the serious portions lack depth. Key tracks, including Rukmini Vasanth and Gulshan Devaiah's king character are poor in the first half. Still, the explosive interval manages to make up for these shortcomings and sets the stage for a bigger, high-stakes second half.
The second half kicks off with an interesting episode linking the tiger to divine beliefs. Apart from Gulshan Devaiah's track, which feels like a miscast, and the weak Telugu dubbing, the second half mostly delivers a satisfying watch. A few episodes toward the pre-climax feel a bit dragged and lengthy, but overall the film maintains momentum and interest.
The pre-climax war sequence might not appeal to everyone, but the events that follow toward the end truly raise the stakes and deliver on the divine element, leaving the audience on a high.
Overall, Kantara Chapter 1 is a significant scale-up compared to 2022's Kantara, several times over in ambition, CG work, action sequences, and the execution of the divine element. It delivers a truly theater-worthy experience.
Performances by Others Actors
Gulshan Devaiah plays the king, a sort of antagonist in the film. In the first half, his role feels patchy and in the second half, when the character is supposed to make an impact, his performance and screen presence don't quite match the ambitious setting or the narrative. At times, he comes across as miscast and the weak Telugu dubbing further adds to the ineffectiveness.
There is a large supporting cast, many of whom deliver solid performances.
Music and Other Departments?
Ajaneesh Loknath composed the background score and songs for Kantara Chapter 1 and he is truly an asset to the film. Several sequences scream quality and deliver extraordinary impact, with the music elevating the visuals and CG work to top-notch levels. Standout examples include the interval sequence, the climax and the iconic divine scream moments, all enhanced brilliantly by his score.
Cinematography by Arvind S Kashyap is excellent, especially in the forest sequences, with world-building and CG shots seamlessly blended into the visuals. The artwork, handled byDharani Gangeputra is equally terrific, adding depth and richness to the film's aesthetic.
Overall, the combined effort in cinematography, music, artwork, and VFX reflects a remarkable vision. The production values by Hombale Films are impressive, leaving no doubt that this is a 100% theater-worthy experience.
