Following the official announcement by KVN Productions about the postponement of Jana Nayagan, social media has been flooded with emotional reactions.
The film was earlier scheduled for a January 9 release.
Fans of Vijay expressed heartbreak and anger online. Many supporters questioned why the Kollywood industry failed to stand by Vijay during what they called a difficult phase for his farewell film.
Several fans pointed out that Vijay has been part of Kollywood for over 33 years. They argued that despite being one of the industry's biggest stars, he has not received public support from fellow actors while facing pressure from political parties. This led to the sentiment that Kollywood does not deserve Vijay.
The postponement has also caused financial strain for exhibitors and theatre owners. Jana Nayagan reportedly crossed 50 crores in pre-bookings, and the delay now forces theatres to refund these amounts.
Trade experts have strongly criticised the Central Board of Film Certification over the delay. They said postponing a major star film damages trust among distributors and creates uncertainty around big releases.
Experts also highlighted that most star films apply for censorship just 10 to 14 days before release. In contrast, the Jana Nayagan team reportedly submitted the film 20 days in advance.
Despite the early submission, the CBFC has not issued a certificate. This has led many to believe that the delay is not related to the film's content but due to other reasons.
Meanwhile, fans continue to back Vijay strongly. Many believe that whenever Jana Nayagan finally releases, it will perform exceptionally well at the box office.
There is now speculation that if the High Court verdict on January 9 is favourable and the censor certificate is issued soon after, the makers may aim for a January 13 or 14 release. Otherwise, the film could be pushed to January 23 or the first week of February.
For now, the industry and fans are waiting to see when Jana Nayagan will finally reach theatres and whether this delay will affect its box office performance.
