Kollywood is clearly staring at a superstar vacuum, and it has become difficult to ignore.
With Vijay stepping away from full time cinema to focus on politics, Tamil cinema has lost its most bankable contemporary star.
For years, Vijay was the safest bet for producers mounting big budget films. His absence has left a gap that no one within the industry has convincingly filled yet.
That leaves Rajinikanth as the only undisputed crowd puller. While his box office power remains intact, age naturally limits the kind of roles and subjects he can take on. He cannot be the answer for every large-scale project. Ajith, on the other hand, appears largely uninterested in cinema at the moment and prefers to focus on his passion for car racing rather than chasing films or stardom. Suriya has struggled to regain momentum after a string of flops, making him a risky proposition for massive budgets.
Dhanush remains one of the finest actors India has produced and enjoys pan India recognition. However, as a box office force, he is better suited for content driven or mid-range projects. Carrying a Rs. 300 to 400 crore tentpole film purely on star power is not something the trade currently associates with him.
This is where Tollywood enters the picture. For the first time in years, a Telugu star has a genuine opportunity to establish a dominant presence in Tamil Nadu. That star is Allu Arjun. With proven pan India appeal and a strong following in Tamil markets post Pushpa, he has emerged as the first choice for Tamil directors planning big budget spectacles.
Filmmakers like Atlee, Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Nelson, along with several other new age commercial directors, are increasingly looking beyond Kollywood for star power. Right now, Allu Arjun sits at the top of that wish list. In Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan is leading the race to capture Tamil directors.
In short, Kollywood's current void has opened a rare window, and Allu Arjun is perfectly positioned to step in and redefine the Tamil big budget landscape.
