What Is the Film About?

Jay (Sree Vishnu) works as an obituary collector for a newspaper.

However, he harbours the dream of becoming a crime bureau reporter.

What happens when he accidentally stumbles upon a case with a mysterious shadow like a killer? The movie's basic plot is how he fights for himself and solves the case without the system's support.

Performances

Sree Vishnu plays a non-comedic part after a while. It's not that he has done it before, but there has been a lot lately on one front which makes an outing like Mrityunjay come across as a relief.

The setup and story gives Sree Vishnu an opportunity to be in a different space while also exploring the dramatic side, a little bit. The scenes with the girl child are an example. They are done with subtlety. The rest of the narrative hangs on him just being effective enough to convey the plot points, which he does with ease and sincerity.

Reba Monica John is wasted. It's the thought that instantly comes to the mind looking at the way the character is written and plays a part in the narrative. Nothing else is there to talk about her except that she looks alright in the police uniform.

Analysis

Hussain Sha Kiran writes and directs Mrityunjay. It's a proper crime thriller narrative with a strong protagonist and antagonist.

The movie's basic setup and hero's background offers a fresh beginning to the movie. However, for a thriller it takes a little too much time to get to the actual point.

The pace and the narrative picks up half an hour into the proceedings when the investigation concerning a murder commences. The clues and the deductions are key to the thrill and enjoyment in tales like this. And that's where the movie falters.

However, the falling doesn't happen immediately, but it's a gradual process and it's a feeling that sets in once we enter the last hour during the second half.

The portions leading to the interval are decent and the interval bang itself is fine. It makes one curious and look forward to the second half.

The beginning of the post intermission is also good where the villain selects a task and the natural progress of things when the two characters sense a face-off is decent, as well.

But, it's the actual scenes, the content in them and the editing that derail the proceedings. It makes one turn their head in all sorts of directions.

The hero's deduction all happens very conveniently. A conversation and hero has a new clue, an action and hero gets what he's looking for, an incident and hero can guess the entire chain of events. It all is made to look intelligent, but comes across as dumb. Also writing makes all the scenes look overstuffed.

The second half moves in the same style as mentioned above following all the genre formulas. There is little emotional drama into the mix as well. The narrative doesn't feel like flowing freely and rather is uneven. The momentum is never generated. There is a decent scene, it is then followed by sheer unbelievable moments.

The climax too is stretched and again relies on the convince. It neatly encapsulates the problem with the entire movie until the point in a single block.

Overall, Mrityunjay has a decent premise for a crime thriller movie. The killer thread offers some freshness. But, the screenplay and writing lets things down. Try it if you love thrillers but have the expectations in check.

Performances by Others Actors

A number of actors are seen as part of the story, but only a few matter. The most important one is that of the villain essayed by Sadhu. He is fine in the role that presented powerfully. Apart from him, Sudarshan gets the next best footage. He is okay. The rest of the cast is alright.

Music And Other Departments:

Kaala Bhairava's music is okay. The songs don't register, but the bgm works in parts. The cinematography is decent. Some parts do lack the big screen appeal, though. The editing gives a patchy feel to the narrative. The growing momentum and energy a thriller needs to build to give the edge-of-the-seat experience is missing.
