A viral video has sparked fresh debate over Goa's taxi services, with a tourist criticizing local unions for charging exorbitant fares and restricting private taxi apps like Ola and Uber.
He claimed that each hotel is associated with a taxi union, leaving visitors with no choice but to pay steep rates.
Sharing his own experience, he said a driver demanded Rs 1,600 for a 10 km ride, making a round trip to a restaurant cost Rs 3,500. "It's outrageous," he said, comparing Goa's system to Thailand and Indonesia, where tourists enjoy significantly cheaper travel options.
He argued that such high costs discourage exploration, limiting how much content travelers share online, which in turn affects tourism growth. Social media reactions to the video were divided. Some dismissed the claims, arguing that affordable alternatives like bike and scooter rentals are widely available.
Others suggested that some tourists deliberately exaggerate problems for attention. A few even blamed the behavior of certain visitors, particularly from Delhi, for Goa's changing tourism experience.

However, many sympathized with the tourist, saying that while solo travelers can manage on two-wheelers, families have fewer options. Others pointed out that Goa's rising costs in accommodation, food, and transport make it less attractive to budget-conscious travelers.
Some also raised concerns over monopolistic practices, arguing that restricted competition in the taxi sector prevents fair pricing and better services. While the debates continue, many believe that introducing private taxi apps or more affordable transport options is crucial to making Goa a more tourist-friendly destination.
