This year, several big-budget Telugu films have not only become commercial hits but are also making waves on OTT platforms, particularly Netflix.
These films are now ranking high in the global non-English movie category on Netflix.
Biggest OTT Blockbuster Season 3: Coming Soon?
A few years ago, Netflix was struggling in India due to its higher subscription rates and limited regional content. However, recognizing the growing global demand for Telugu and Tamil films, Netflix shifted its strategy.
It started acquiring rights for these films, and since 2023, Netflix has shown a significant growth spurt, especially in the Telugu film market.
Biggest Disappointments on OTT: Not Just Mirzapur
The recent success of films like Devara Part 1, Lucky Bhaskar, and Hi Nanna on Netflix highlights this shift.
Devara Part 1, starring NTR and directed by Koratala Siva, was a massive hit at the box office, grossing around 400 crores worldwide. After its OTT release on November 8, it quickly topped the Netflix charts.
OTT Verdict of the Week: Disappointing, Unexciting
Similarly, Lucky Bhaskar, starring Dulquer Salmaan, was released during Diwali and earned around 110 crores. It secured the 3rd spot in Netflix's non-English category.
Hi Nanna, featuring Nani, also garnered immense viewership, ranking at number 4.
In addition to these, Salaar, Kalki 2898 AD, and Saripodhaa Sanivaaram have also found success on the platform. This further cements Netflix's strong presence in the Telugu film market.
One surprise has been the unexpected success of Mahesh Babu's Guntur Kaaram, a film that underperformed at the box office. Despite this, it has made a mark on Netflix's global charts.
Its Hindi version garnered over 5 million views, proving that Netflix is becoming a platform where even underperforming films can find significant success.
This trend reflects Netflix's growing influence and its ability to monetize even niche or regional content effectively.
Netflix minted a lot of money even from flop Telugu films this year.
