SS Rajamouli, in the documentary, mentioned, "About three decades back in 1998, Rajinikanth's Muthu was released in Japan, and a Tamil film that was the highest grosser until then. We hoped that RRR would touch Muthu."

RRR became the highest-grossing Indian film in Japan by surpassing Muthu which held the record for more than two decades. But if we consider inflation and market expansion, Muthu can still be considered unbeaten.
