What Is the Film About?
Sreeram (Shivaji) is an honest Panchayat Revenue officer with a family consisting of wife and son.
One day, he finds himself in an unexpected situation that forces him to leave the house and be on the run.
What's the situation? The basic story is how Sreeram manages to get out of the messy situation he lands in along with his family.
Performances
Shivaji has been a rejuvenated presence on screen since his comeback. The role of Sreeram takes him back to the rooted series that brought him back after a hiatus. However, the characterization is changed here keeping the movie narrative in mind.
Right from the start, Shivaji is in the zone delivering what's required be it a small moment of chemistry with his partner or having deadpan expressions as reactions. His act gets better and turns emotional towards the end. He does well as per the requirement.
Laya is a welcome presence on the screen. She nails the nagging and dumb housewife character with ease. However, the character itself lacks the meat. It becomes repetitive and irritating after a point. She does try to breathe life, but that's a difficult job even for her. The good thing is the brief old school chemistry the duo (Shivaji and Laya) manage to bring.
Analysis
Sudheer Sriram writes and directs Sampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani. It's a crime comedy cum road trip movie involving a family setup.
The director takes time in building up the world. There are many characters who have an introduction each and then don't appear. There is over the top fun, drama and emotion happening in between. The inconsistent tone hits like bricks.
Still, some moments do shine not due to the writing or anything else, but because of the actors and the situation they are in. The scenes after the incident happen are prime examples.
However, a lot is happening around them. Too many characters seem to be doing too many things. It bloats the narrative. By the time one reaches the interval, one feels tired even though not much time has passed actually.
The second half takes the tired and stretched feeling to the next level. The road journey, the characters and twists that occur are simultaneously generic and far too convenient. Take the case of Ali's character for example, the way he is used is a prime example. It's a formula, but that doesn't fit organically into the proceedings.
The emotional drama that occurs further along the way doesn't touch in any way despite the repercussions it promises. We don't feel it, and just want the journey to reach its end.
The climax has a twist that could have worked had the rest of the narrative worked. As it is, it feels convoluted. The execution too is lackluster. It feels like everyone is in a hurry to wrap things up. The awkwardness in presentation can be felt.
Overall, Sampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani's kind of narrative needs very sharp execution. It's a fine and delicate balance that's difficult to achieve, but if achieved makes the whole narrative look very smooth and light. We have the opposite here with lots of lag and boredom. It's a film that screams OTT.
Performances by Others Actors
The child actor Rohan Roy does his usual, but the impact is missing. Several known faces like Prince, Dhanraj, Sharath Lohitashwa, etc. are present as part of the ensemble cast, but none have a memorable role. One that people can remember after coming out. Senior comedian Ali is seen after a gap. He does the brief role in his regular style.
Music and Other Departments?
Ranjin Raj's music doesn't stand out. In fact one forgets about it after a point, as there are other things to get distracted about. The cinematography and editing gives the movie a web film look. It lacks the big screen appeal. The writing tries hard to be quirky and fun, but it falls flat.
Highlights?
Shivaji
Laya (Briefly)
Some Quirky Situations
Drawbacks?
Extreme Drag
Second Half
Boring Drama
Humour Doesn't Land
Did I Enjoy It?
No. The movie feels far more lengthy than it is actually when seen theatrically.
Will You Recommend It?
No. Some parts can be okay on OTT, but there's nothing more.
