Visakhapatnam is set to implement a Rs 1425 crore Smart Street Vending transformation to bring structure, better design and dignity to street commerce.

The initiative also aims to enhance the overall visual appeal and organised growth of the city.

Smart Street Vending zones will be developed across key locations. These include 70 units at RR Center in Madhuravada, another 70 units near Duvvada Flyover at Kurmannapalem in Gajuwaka, and 110 units at Suryabagh Central Park under GVMC.

Recently, encroachments were cleared from roads, signals and junctions as part of Operation LUNGS 2.0. This drive focused on easing traffic flow, improving pedestrian safety and supporting city beautification efforts.

As per the Street Vendors Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending Act, 2014, urban local bodies must issue identity cards, prepare vending plans and establish dedicated vending zones for vendors.

Each beneficiary will deposit Rs 2.5 lakh for the project. Facilities include pre-fabricated kiosks, solar lighting, digital payments, waste management, sanitation, seating, CCTV surveillance, skill support and FSSAI certification.

While malls offer convenience, local street shopping brings charm through interaction and bargaining. This new GVMC initiative aims to blend both experiences, offering organised retail vibrancy as Vizag moves closer to becoming a global city.
