Telangana: Metro Third Phase Expansion Decided

The long-awaited third phase of the Hyderabad Metro is moving closer to reality. Hyderabad is set to receive its third Metro phase. The second phase covered 152.5 km, while the proposed third phase is planned across 178 km.

The Telangana government has accelerated efforts to secure central approvals, prepare design plans and allocate funds. This phase aims to extend Metro services to the city outskirts. The focus is on improving access beyond the core urban areas.

A large workforce travels daily from outskirts into the city for employment. Most commuters depend on buses, where frequency remains irregular. Many are forced to change multiple buses, while traffic congestion increases daily travel stress.

To address these challenges, the Revanth Reddy government has prioritised the third Metro phase. The project features prominently in the Telangana Rising 2047 document. Areas identified include Medchal, Patancheru, Ghatkesar, Hayat Nagar and Shamirpet.

The target is to complete the Metro expansion by 2047. Improved connectivity will allow faster access to IT corridors and the airport. This expansion is expected to support future urban and economic growth.

Currently, the Metro network spans 69.2 km. If expansion progresses at 15 km annually from next year, the network could reach 400 km by 2047. Delays continue due to funding issues and pending central approvals.

At present, the government is working on taking over the Metro operations from L&T. This process is expected to conclude by early next year. Once completed, attention can fully shift to expansion plans.

Completion of the Metro network is expected to significantly reduce travel time. It is also likely to lower pollution levels and ease traffic congestion across Hyderabad.
