Originally expected to hit theatres in January 2025, the release was postponed without any announcements. According to inside reports, the main issue behind the delay was a disagreement over OTT rights.
At that time, Mohanlal was going through a rough patch with multiple box office disasters like Barroz and Malaikottai Vaaliban. Streaming platforms weren't willing to pay big for Thudarum unless it had a strong theatrical run first.
However, the producers were aiming for a safer bet. They wanted to finalize the OTT deal before the theatrical release to reduce financial risk.
As talks dragged on without a satisfactory offer, the planned release was delayed. Eventually, the streaming rights were sold before the film hit cinemas.
According to reports, Jio Hotstar acquired the rights for over ₹20 crores. While the exact figure remains unconfirmed, it's considered one of the bigger OTT deals in the Malayalam industry.

Surprisingly, Thudarum turned out to be a huge theatrical hit. In just 26 days, it grossed 225 crores worldwide, making it the third highest grossing Malayalam film ever. Its success even took OTT platforms by surprise.
Initially, the movie was expected to start streaming this week. But thanks to its performance in theatres, that plan has changed. The makers have requested JioHotstar to delay the OTT release to early June to maximize theatrical revenues.
Thudarum's journey-from OTT uncertainty to box office glory-is a reminder of how unpredictable the movie business can be. What started as a cautious project has now become one of Mohanlal's biggest hits in recent years.
