300 deaths reported in Mumbai due to building collapses in seven years
On July 16, 2020, a part of Bhanushali building in Mumbai's Fort area collapsed as it was in the dilapidated conditions. This incident killed six people and several were injured. Another similar incident was reported in Malad Malvani resulting in injuries for several residents.
Such incidents have been reported for a long time from different areas in Mumbai and several residents have been killed or injured so far. Data released by RTI activist Shakeel Sheikh stated that over the seven years, i.e., from 2013 to 2019, a total of 3,945 structures have collapsed in Mumbai, killing 300 people and leaving 1,146 people injured. The information regarding such buildings collapses were received by Shakeel from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Furthermore, in the six years, between 2013 to 2018, 49,179 accidents related to either fire, building collapse, cracks, electric shock, flooding in the nullah, drowning in the sea, etc., were reported, claiming 987 lives and 3,066 people being injured. In 2019 alone, 9943 such incidents were reported out of which 137 people were killed and 579 injured. This includes 372 males and 207 females.
