Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation gets a new Commissioner

On Thursday, Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer Vijay Suryavanshi was appointed as the new commissioner of the Kalyan Domibivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). Suryavanshi is a 2006 batch IAS officer and had been the collector for Raigad district from July 2017 until last month.

'I have planned to join KDMC on Friday. I served as a collector in Raigad district for around three years and was then transferred to the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan as managing director but I did not take over the post,' said Suryavanshi on Thursday.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, on January 21, Suryavanshi was transferred to take charge as the managing director of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd but he did not take over the post.

Since March 2018, outgoing commissioner Govind Bodke served as the KDMC chief. However, as per sources, Bodke has not been given any new charge until now.

'My experience as KDMC commissioner was good as it was a new challenge for me. There is a lot of scope of development in the city. All the officers and politicians were very co-operative during my tenure,' said Bodke.

Meanwhile, the new commissioner will look to resolve two major issues in the Kalyan Dombivli region, i.e. improving the condition of roads in the area, and the completion of the Patripool Bridge.

The utterly miserable condition of the roads has been a persistent issue for the citizens of Kalyan-Dombivli region. Earlier this month, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had announced ₹100 crores for the KDMC. Therefore, the civic body must look to use the funds to make amends its existing condition of roads.

Patripool bridge is a 104-year-old bridge and it had to be demolished in August 2018 as it was declared unsafe to travel by the Central Railways. At the time of demolishing, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation had assured the commuters that the new bridge will come up in six months, but the construction has not been completed yet.
